Ottawa business shows how they make 'rolled ice cream'
Arslan Shaikh and his fellow co-owners at Happy Rolls ice cream bar in Wellington West opened a couple of weeks ago with their unique ice cream. All natural, featuring just a few ingredients and made by hand on frozen slabs, these ice cream rolls are fairly new to the capital but originated in Thailand and Asia and are now popular around the world.

    The Jewish Federation of Ottawa held its annual golf tournament at Rideau View Golf Club Monday, July 8, raising critical funds for Ottawa’s Jewish community. This premier event supports agencies like the Bess and Moe Greenberg Family Hillel Lodge, the Soloway JCC, Tamir, Jewish Family Services and the Ottawa Jewish Community School, as well as programs such as the Kosher Food Bank. The funds enable these organizations to provide essential social services, community-building initiatives and educational support. Chaired by Ben and Matthew Sherman, this year’s tournament continued the tradition of philanthropy, highlighting the community’s dedication to sustaining vital services and programs.

  4. Social Scene | Community Builders: The King of the Castle

    On Friday, June 28, the Fairmont Château Laurier’s Peacock Alley buzzed with excitement as guests gathered for the launch of Stewart: King of the Castle, a heartwarming children’s book by local author and hotel employee Lee Power. The event featured a special appearance by Stewart himself, the hotel’s canine ambassador, alongside several of his human and canine friends, including Coco, a Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy. A portion of the proceeds from the book sales will support Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. “I was beyond thrilled to see the project come to life and also to give back to Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind,” said Geneviève Dumas, Fairmont Château Laurier’s general manager. Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind has been training and pairing their guide dogs with people needing their assistance since 1984. Based in Manotick, the organization provides essential services countrywide and internationally. “We train clients all across Canada and internationally,” said Jessie Thornton, the organization’s director of canine operations and care. “We rely solely on donations from very generous members of the public.” Stewart, known for his extroverted and friendly nature, participates in the organization’s canine ambassador program. “Now he’s the king of the castle,” Thornton chuckled, highlighting his suitability for the role. Power, executive assistant to the hotel’s general manager, read a line from her book: “Greeting prime ministers and other world leaders is just another busy day in Stewart’s life.” Stewart has greeted 54 heads of state since starting at the hotel. Donations to Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, can be made at www.guidedogs.ca. Copies of Stewart: King of the Castle can be purchased at the Fairmont Château Laurier’s hotel coffee shop, Café Laurier. Your contributions and purchases will help continue the vital work of training guide dogs for the visually impaired.
